DEEP BACKGROUND:

Inspired by a conversation with a former Italian Interpol agent from the late Sixties, New York artist and DJ Reynard Loki (a.k.a. "El Rey") created INTERPOL, a monthly multimedia event that joins club culture with the art world and debuted at Plant in September, 2001. INTERPOL presents a dark and sensual aural and visual environment that captures a modern, cinematic reworking of espionage, covert operations and film noir.

Reynard Loki invited video artist Paul Clay of FICTIVE to do visuals for the event. Paul's interest in free speech and tactical media (ie media by individuals rather than corporations) led to a series on digital espionage, freedom of information, world intelligence gathering, national suppression of populations through technology, and the outer edges of current media and visualization. Part of this project involves encouraging spectators who happen to have digital media on them to jack it into the system as additional source material - attempting to reverse on a grass roots level the hierarchical control of current media.
