Upcountry - Anywhere outside of Bangkok. Dosn't necessarily
mean north / up - can be east / west / south too.

Kaew lives in a village in Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand. She has three sons and
was married to an abusive husband, who drank too much. In May 1992, Kaew went to Japan on a
ninety day tourist visa, hoping to earn enough money to care for her children. "I had three
kids, my husband drank, and we had no money," Kaew explained, "so I had to do something."
Several years later, Kaew traveled to southern Thailand, to the city of Hat Yai in Songkhla
province, to work as a sex worker. After that she tried Bangkok. "I went back and forth
several times trying to make money, leaving my children with my mother."

Remember, the girls come from a part of the country
where the average monthly wage is only about 3-4000 baht.
500 baht is a lot of money in rural Thailand so,
why not just pay them 500 baht?
Well, just ten years ago you could do that
but too many people giving too much ruined those fine days...
